It doesn't seem possible that a high, mountanious region like the Southern Shiverpeaks was once covered in water.
By the way, it's an otter.

If I am not mistaken the original gods fought with the dragons and only managed to put them in a deep sleep.
Also the great destroyer was basically the head dragon's alarm clock, by defeating him in GW:EN we pretty much just slowed down the awakening of the head dragon by about 200 years.

Hmm. It occurs to me that GW2 could benefit from a little touch of Ragnarok...

Do you have any written evidence of that? Not that it sounds unlikely. But I've been looking for any evidence of original gods and how the dragons got hibernated in the first place.
My theory was that the dragons might have been the original gods and they were deposed by Balthazar and Co. This explains why the first creature that the original gods created were Glint (a Dragon) and Forgotten (dragon-like beings, look at the mural of a Forgotten in Ascalon city). After that, Balthazar and Co deposed them and created the rest of Tyria.

What 1 up and 2 down said about "Dragons vs Gods" is one of the theories given in the other Dragon thread. The thing about the alarm clock is however in a way true.
One of the people from Anet have said they put the Drakkar there to show it went to sleep and gradually had the enviroment change around it.

Actually I do.

This was from the pcgamer magazine that had lore about GW2 and what I quoted is talking about the dragons.

This was also from the pcgamer magazine.
So I do in fact have "written evidence".

I have a feeling due to the model's great amount of detail. Perhaps its a model already in use in GW2? Such as a boss.
After all GW2 is still Directx 9.

The whole rival thing never actually says anything about the gods facing the Dragons and putting them into a deep sleep. All it seems to say is that the Dragons rival the gods in terms of power (especially since it says Glint and Kuunavang are nowere near there power before that line)

Pfft they were being vague in case they wanted to change some details. But I am almost positive that I am right.

As to some of the questions of fighting the dragon, if you think back to the PCGamer Issue where you could get a Mini-Asura, it says something along the lines of ...
"Imagine a dragon comes flying along and begins attacking a bridge, all the characters in the area can choose to help fight the dragon and be rewarded, or let the bridge be destroyed, causing workers to take a month to repair it.."
Something like that, this is how they sort of began the talk of GW2 in that Mag.

Yup, it's beauty alright =P
And to all those concerned: The Drakkar, along with the other 4 dragons, have been in a deep hybernation. It is stated so in the magazine that gave out the mini destroyer. The Drakkar slept in a place that was - at the time - safe. It has been asleep so long that the world changed around it over the course of over 11,000 years (I think at least), and now it is under a lake.
The thing mentioned about a dragon destroying a village and ect about GW2, It wasn't a direct reference, it was an example. There will be dragons in GW2 however I think they'll have more to do that break a bridge or two.
My best guess is, the 5 Gods we know, are infact beings of imense power, so old that they themselves come from a time when the true giants lived on tyria as told in the lore (Which is like 10,000 Before Exodus). God-like to us as we have limited power, however these 5 gods gave the world magic. If they can GIVE magic that powerful imagine what they DIDN'T give, lol.
These dragons no doubt have this same type of raw, ancient magic. If the gods and dragons clashed, it would mean the end of us all. Perhaps that's a reason that the gods haven't been seen as much in GW2 after the dragons awoken, because they know that waring with the dragons to save tyria would actually do so much mor damage than letting the dragons have it.
The true giants/dragons and the 5 gods are amazingly powerful beings, and I think that at one point they waged war between one another. The 5 gods somehow found a way to escape to the rift, and with them gone the dragons saw nothing else to do than hybernate. Or perfats the dragons first went into hybernation and with nothing to do the 5 gods left to the mists, who knows? =P

Also, I would like to add that I now have a new computer with a much better graphics card, and I haven't yet tried to clear the lake out again to see if I may still view the Drakkar as clear as I once could, however I would assume not now...
Good thing I have like 50 screens of the damn thing! XD

its gonna be awsome have like 200+ people all fighting this one HUGE dragon that just destroys everything. Kind of arcadey...if you know what i am saying. Kind of like the feeling they were trying to get at with abbadon, the feel of fighting a true god or huge creature or one huge mega boss that takes sooo much to defeat. if anyone ever played silkroad online on the europ servers there was the one dragon that would randomly spawn and just destroy people left and right
FOUND IT: watch this video
http://youtube.com/watch?v=G87eU764ZI8&feature=related
that would be sweet if thats what the dragon fights are like in GW2

also my comp runs gw on highest graphics and i can c it fine so ya.

that post about the asura golem combinations made me get an idea.
What if the Asura actually captured the powers of the gods, and put them in golem, then Dwayna golem and Balthazar golem could fuse into WAMMOBOT. not to mention LYSSA golem and DWAYNA golem into (huge drums) ECHO MENDERBOT

I had to run out on Drakkar myself and check it out. Boy was I shocked at how big Drakkar really is. While doing this, I also thought "how big are these dragons really?" Which then prompted me to press "m" and bring up my map.
The following image may startle some:
As you can see, Drakkar can be seen all the way zoomed out on the map. That means this (the smallest of the dragons) is already insanely huge. I can't begin to imagine what the others look like, let alone fighting them.
Edit: Image was cropped out of larger map image fyi
